AR Aging: Why Old Invoices Are Worth Less Than You Think

Every day an invoice ages past 30 days, its probability of collection drops. This isn't pessimism β€” it's actuarial reality. The Commercial Collection Agency Association and trade credit management literature consistently show the same curve: invoices collected within 30 days recover at 90%+; at 90+ days, recovery drops to 25% or less.

The standard collection probability curve

Sources: Commercial Collection Agency Association (CCAA) guidelines; trade credit management industry benchmarks. These are standard estimates, not guarantees for any specific business.

Why the priority score matters

The priority algorithm β€” (days_aged^1.2) × log(amount) β€” weights overdue time more than invoice size, because collection probability decays faster than you lose on smaller amounts. A $2,000 invoice at 90 days is often a worse position than a $10,000 invoice at 30 days. The exponent (1.2) captures this non-linear decay. This is the same formula RollForge uses in production to rank dunning sequences.
